After 57 years of glorious service, Bentley’s 6.8-liter V8 one-of-a-kind super powerful engine is finally ready to «retire». Wolfgang Dürheimer, the CEO of Bentley has recently shared with Car and Drive that the engine is a bad match for the next generation Mulsanne, instead, they will power it up with V-12 engine.

First launched in 1959, the V-8, also known as «L-series» has always been used for Rolls-Royce and Bentley car models. It came to life with 6.2 liters but over the decades has evolved into 6.75-liters remaining relevant as of today.

Despite its evolution, the V-8 has preserved many initial traits: the block is still made from aluminum and the bore center spacing thus far retained the same. Although its updated version delivers cylinder deactivation, variable timing of valves operating, and turbocharging.

So far, the engine serves for Bentley Mulsanne only, producing 505 horsepower and the torque of 752 lb-ft.

Albeit Bentley's CEO announcment of V-8 finding its "final home", he never lifted the veil of when the realization of the new V-12 will take place. Car and Drive thinks it's still no fewer than five years away.
